NS Nenagh 2013

ST MARYS NS NENAGH 2013

This project involved the design of a new2 storey extension to the existing single storey National school within the Town.

The proposed extension is contemporary in style but blends well with the existing in terms of scale and proportion.

The upper floor classrooms will double as a GP room gives the school a much needed recreation option to the restricted outdoor play areas. This validates the expression of this volume as a new and special space, which is defined in a different aesthetic manner.

The volume itself is articulated by breaking it up it to panels of coloured render and cladding elements. This again helps to ensure no elevation is overly austere or overwhelming in terms of scale.

The proposed design concept has been driven by the principles of passive solar design and the use of a thermally massive internal structure to help regulate temperature.

The building will use mixed mode ventilation to help purge heat by stack effect when required through the stair atrium. The glazing has been design to increase the daylight factor to minimise the running cost of artificial lighting.

All these design decisions will help deliver a building which offers a sustainable approach to heating/lighting/cooling.

The project is due to commence in 2014.
