Castlelough 2012

This house is located on an elevated site overlooking lough derg in the context of an older estate known as Castlelough demesne.

This dwelling is designed as a single storey courtyard house typology, similar in scale to some of the worker cottages which are part of the heritage of Demesne’s.

In addition it is proposed not to place the car parking to the road side of the dwelling, in order to further reduce the traditional arrangement of a large asphalted set down areas to the front of the dwellings.

This approach coupled with the sensitive landscape plan will help integrate the proposal, and ensure it has the look and feel of the heritage type Demesne structures, which are what inspired the concept for this dwelling

The dwelling design uses combinations of white and grey roughcast render and Local stone in the walls to provide visual architectural interest, and also to give the proposed structure the feel of an older structure albeit with a contemporary twist.

The roof cladding is primarily natural slate with a small element of zinc cladding facing the courtyard.

The dwelling’s maximum ridge height is 5.5m, which gives it a very low impact, when viewed from the road/lake.

.

The primary organizing element and concept for this house was the courtyard, which faces due south and frames the distant views of the mountains the south.

The house is constructed as a low energy dwelling to a high specification with an extremely air tight envelope, achieving an A2 rating.

The dwelling is due for completion in Aug 2014.
